Summary :
⁣The egde functionalization of graphene layers was performed with biosourced C-3 and C-6 molecules, glycerol and galactaric acid derivatives: pyrrole compounds and 2-pyrones, respectively. Their synthesis and the functionalization of the graphene layers were done in line with the principles of green chemistry, avoiding solvents and catalysts, by simply mixing them with the graphitic material, with the help of either thermal or mechanical energy. High functionalization yield, up to 96%, high atom efficiency and very low E Factor were obtained. The bulk structure of the carbon substrate was left substantially unaltered, as demonstrated by X-ray and Raman analysis. Functional groups of defined chemical structure were covalently bound to the edges of the carbon material and the adducts were found to be stable up to very high temperature (> 200°C).
