Summary :
⁣This talk covers my recent work in the synthesis and structural design of functional nanographenes lithium ion batteries. We attempted a multi-step bottom-up organic synthesis of a series of 2D and 3D nanographenes with various functional groups attached to the edge of the graphene basil planes. The optimized electronic structure and facilitated electron transfer have led to energy storage ten times the capacity of graphite, especially at extremely high current density, suggesting that the optimal design of conjugated nanographenes is promising for next generation lithium ion batteries with superior energy storage efficiency and rate capability.

About Author :
⁣Hung-Ju Yen is an Assistant Research Fellow in Institute of Chemistry at Academia Sinica. He earned his B.S. (2006) and M.S. (2007) from National Chi Nan University and then completed his Ph.D. degree with the 1st prize of PhD graduates from National Taiwan University (NTU) in 2011. He joined Los Alamos National Laboratory as the J. Robert Oppenheimer Fellow (2013-2017) after the postdoctoral training at NTU (2011, 2012-2013). Dr. Yen’s main research interest lies in the organic synthesis of functional nanographenes and electroactive polymers for optoelectronic and energy applications.
