Audit of management of Tubo-Ovarian abscess TOA | Ahmed Elgherinay
Summary :
A tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA) is an inflammatory mass involving the fallopian tube, ovary, and occasionally adjacent viscera. TOA carries a high morbidity and mortality rate of 5-10% when assocaited with severe sepsis. It is a common acute gynaecological presentation for which there are no national guidelines to guide clinical decision making. Management varies based on clinical presentation and experience of the clinician, and is based on IV antibiotics (conservative management), image guided drainage, or surgical options. In recent years, the laparoscopic approach to surgical intervention has gained favour due to reduced morbidity and quicker recovery time.
